The Four-Rung Story Routine

One story. Four rungs. Every pupil climbs from where they are.

Free worksheets are single sheets you still have to adapt for each child. Storyrung gives your whole class one shared story each week, and every pupil answers it on their own rung.

  1. 1

    Point & choose

Point to or stick the picture. No speaking or writing needed: PECS and AAC answers count.

Rung 1 sheet: Point & choose, five picture questions
  2. 2

    Choose the word

Circle the word that fits, with a picture next to each choice.

Rung 2 sheet: Choose the word, with picture choices
  3. 3

    Sequence & retell

Put four moments in order, then retell: first, next, then, last.

Rung 3 sheet: Sequence and retell in four boxes
  4. 4

    Write

Answer in a sentence with a starter and a word bank, on infant handwriting lines.

Rung 4 sheet: Write, with sentence starters and a word bank
  1. MonRead
  2. TuePoint
  3. WedSequence
  4. ThuAnswer

Made for SEN classrooms in England.

It’s for you if you are…

  • An SEN teacher in a special class, resource base or special school (KS1 level).
  • A TA or LSA working 1:1 or with a small reading group.
  • Teaching pupils who point, use PECS or AAC, or are starting to write, including older pupils who read like younger ones.

It’s not for you if…

  • You need a therapy or clinical intervention: it doesn’t replace your SALT or EHCP targets.
  • Your pupils already read fluently, or you want a full phonics scheme.
  • You can’t print: it’s A4 PDFs.

Who’s behind Storyrung?

Storyrung is a small, independent publisher of adapted reading resources for SEN classrooms. We’re not a school, and we don’t pretend to be teachers. We built one routine (one story a week, four rungs) after reading hundreds of SEN teachers and TAs in England say the same thing: “I have to do all my own resources.” It’s written for the English school year, in British spelling, on A4.

No reviews yet, and we won’t invent any. Storyrung is new: read the free sample story in full first, and the 30-day guarantee covers the rest.

Questions teachers ask.

Can my school pay for it?

Yes. Pay by card and claim it back: your order confirmation is your receipt. If your school orders with a purchase order or needs an invoice addressed to the school, email us before ordering and we’ll sort it out with your school office. Your licence covers one teacher or TA and the pupils they teach; for several staff, ask us about a whole-school licence.

Will it work for pupils who are non-verbal or can’t write yet?

That’s what Rung 1 is for: pupils answer by pointing to or sticking a picture, so a look, a point, a PECS card or an AAC button all count. Every book page also has a “No pieces? Point to it” strip.

Is it too babyish for older pupils?

The stories are written at a low reading level but without a babyish tone, and the pictures show objects and places, never cartoon children. It suits KS1 and emerging readers in KS2.

How much preparation does it take?

Print the A4 pages in black and white and staple the book. Cutting out the picture pieces and laminating them are optional. The “Start here” page gets your first story ready in about 10 minutes.

When do I get each term?

The Spring Term (13 stories) downloads as soon as you pay. The Summer Term is emailed by 6 April 2027 and the Autumn Term by 1 August 2027. If any term arrives after its date, email us for a full refund of your order.

Why not just use free worksheets?

Free sheets are single activities you still have to adapt for each pupil. Storyrung is one new story each week, already written at four levels, with the same routine, so the whole class reads the same book and every pupil can join in.

Who writes it, and how are the pictures made?

Storyrung, a small independent publisher. The stories and the four rungs are written and checked by people. The illustrations are made with AI image tools and then checked and edited by hand for every story.

Why do I tick a box before paying?

Because the stories download straight away, the law (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013) asks you to expressly agree to instant access and to acknowledge that you lose the 14-day cancellation period for digital downloads. Our 30-day guarantee still applies.

Next Monday, every pupil in your class opens the same book.
